RAID controller battery replacement SOP
Overview
Cache-protected BBU/CacheVault units maintain write-back integrity on power loss. Degraded battery forces write-through—massive latency.
Symptoms
Audible alarm, management utility “battery learn cycle failed,” sudden disk latency without disk faults.
Replacement
- Identify FRU part precisely; some controllers refuse third-party cells.
- Static discharge and server power procedure per vendor (some hot-swap, some not).
Post-install
Allow learn cycle to complete; verify write policy returns to write-back with BBU.
Governance
Asset ticket ties install date; set 3-year reminder even if “green today”—proactive beats emergency.
Logging
Photo of old unit serial for RMA; environmental note if datacenter heat accelerates wear.
