Hyper-V checkpoint versus backup snapshot
Overview
Checkpoints (especially production checkpoints) pause or quiesce VMs for a point-in-time state—not a substitute for backups. Confusing the two causes data loss surprises after “restore.”
Checkpoints
- Useful: pre-change rollback same day, test labs.
- Risky on high-IO DBs without production-aware settings; disk chain growth and merge storms.
Backup snapshots
Your backup product coordinates with VSS/Hyper-V VSS writer for application-consistent images with catalog and index.
Guidance
Never use a long-lived checkpoint as “the backup.” Delete stale checkpoints in maintenance windows; monitor AVHDX growth.
Training cue
If a tech says “we snapshot nightly,” ask which product—checkpoint only is a red flag on production SQL.
