VoIP VLAN and LLDP configuration reminders
Overview
Voice quality improves when switch ports mark DSCP and place phones on a voice VLAN. LLDP-MED automates—when it works.
Baseline
- Voice VLAN ID, DHCP scope or Option 160 for provisioning vendor specifics.
- QoS: trust boundary at switch; phones mark EF/CS5 per vendor; uplinks preserve queues.
- STP edge portfast on phone ports; loop guard awareness if dumb switches appear under desks.
LLDP-MED
Enable on phone-facing ports; verify phones actually negotiate (some cheap injectors break LLDP). Document manual VLAN fallbacks for legacy gear.
Troubleshooting
One bad port configured access data-only causes “calls drop when big copy job runs”—collect SNMP ifOutDiscards and queue stats.
Documentation
Export running config snippet per closet after changes; store in diagram tool not a 2014 Word doc only.
