Egress fee surprises: how to warn clients
Overview
Data egress (especially to internet or another cloud) can spike bills after backups, analytics, or misconfigured telemetry. Set expectations before architecture approval.
Common triggers
- Replicating object storage cross-region without compression.
- Log analytics agents shipping verbose fields to the wrong region.
- CDN mis-origin pulling from expensive endpoints.
- Third-party SaaS scraping large API payloads nightly.
Mitigation patterns
Private connectivity between regions, colocate analytics near data, compress and batch exports, use lifecycle policies to cool storage.
Contracting
For fixed-fee MSP deals, exclude unbounded egress or cap with a change-order clause; document “client-approved design” when they insist on cross-cloud pipes.
Monitoring
Budget alerts + per-service egress dashboards in Cost Management; monthly engineer review of top spenders.
