Email link sandboxing expectations for clients
Overview
Defender for Office 365 Safe Links rewrites URLs and scans at click-time. Clients need realistic expectations about delays and rare breakage.
Set expectations
- First-time safe links may add latency of a second or more.
- Certain transactional emails with one-time tokens may need tenant exceptions—document them.
Troubleshooting loop
- Identify URL domain category: OAuth, marketing, CDN, file share.
- Review detonation details and phish similarity—not all “blocked” are malicious; may be reputation.
- Use report false positive through proper channel when business-critical.
Policy tiers
Strict policy for executives/finance; standard for general users; differentiate attachment policies similarly.
Training tie-in
Teach users that rewritten links are normal in protected tenants; reduces unnecessary panic.
Audit & compliance
Safe Links/Safe Attachments status is a common insurer question—export configuration summaries quarterly.
